Essential trace element, magnesium has multiple functions in the body. In pregnant or breastfeeding, requirements are increased. What are these? How to cover?
Pregnant or lactating special needs magnesium. This mineral is essential for the body of mother and her child.
Specific needs for pregnant women
The recommended daily intake of magnesium for adult women is 360 mg. But during pregnancy, these needs increase to provide baby everything it needs to grow. Because even low, a deficiency can disrupt pregnancy. Thus, it is recommended that the mother consume the third quarter, 400 mg magnesium per day, instead of the usual 360 mg.
Furthermore, it should be particularly careful in early pregnancy, even if needs are not increased. In fact, the nausea that sometimes accompanied the first trimester can cause vomiting that exacerbate mineral deficiencies.
During lactation and after
Requirements are also greater in the lactating woman who needs to increase its intake of magnesium 30 mg daily or 390 mg daily. In fact, breastfeeding can sometimes cause deficiencies. If severe deficits remain very rare in breast, mild deficits are rather more frequent. It should therefore also increase its sources of magnesium.
And baby?
The recommended intakes of magnesium are 6 mg / kg / day. The baby’s needs are increasing rapidly, along with its weight. For infants, the daily quantities needed are estimated at 30 mg in the first half, against 75 mg for the second half.
Attention consumption of highly mineralized water is not suitable for infants. In contrast, during episodes of constipation, and on medical advice only, the water can be consumed by babies.
Where lies the magnesium?
Magnesium lies first in our food, all is whether the finding: green vegetables, whole grains, nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds …), chocolate, etc.. (see our article on this subject).
The average intake of magnesium is variable depending on the food. For example, two slices of wholemeal bread provide 32 mg a serving of rice provides 54 and a mere handful of almonds (about 30g) brings in 90!
Drinking mineral water rich in magnesium may also help address these increased needs, while providing essential hydration during and after pregnancy.
