Olive Oil, Good for Eye Health

Eye HealthThe olive oil has excellent culinary reputation and ranks as one of the key elements for cardiovascular health in the Mediterranean diet.

However, its benefits are greater now that new studies have found that olive oil is also good for eye health, as appears to prevent in particular, macular degeneration, a disease that affects the retina of older people 60 years and is the second leading cause of blindness in the elderly, after diabetes.

Olive oil has components that protect the blood vessels of the eyes and reduce the risk of vision loss, especially after age 50, experts added.

The results of two studies were published in the Archives of Ophthalmology.

The study by researchers at the University of Sydney and the Center for Eye Research Australia, tracked him to 9.234 adults who carried a Mediterranean diet rich in Omega 3 (found in fish, nuts and oil oil) and found that they were less likely to develop problems with the retina. Furthermore, we know that these eye problems are directly associated with nutrition.

How much olive oil should be consumed?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the ideal is to take 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily. One important thing to note is that despite all the olive oils contain monounsaturated fat, those classified as “virgin” and “extra virgin” are more beneficial to a healthy heart and eyes, as they are the least processed and contain the highest levels of polyphenols, an antioxidant that is essential for health.

In addition, olive oil contains other anti-inflammatory components that help protect blood vessels in the eyes and reduce the risk to develop macular degeneration as they age.
