No one knows why women develop the disease as to be sure who is at risk. It is likely that there is no single cause but rather several factors that contributes. After the birth the body is suffering a variety of hormonal changes, which are the main cause of this emotional state. Other factors that can trigger depression: economic problems, problems with spouse, the more children they serve, fatigue, among others.
Some of the manifestations that can occur are:
* Sadness
* Loss of interest or pleasure in life
* Changes in appetite (eating more or less than usual)
* Less energy and motivation to do things
* Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
* Sleeping more than usual
* Frequent crying
* Feeling worthless, hopeless or overly guilty
* Feeling restless, irritable or anxious
* Loss or unexplained weight gain
* Feeling that it is not worth living
* Think of attack or harm your baby
If you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms after delivery and they last longer than a week, talk to your doctor immediately. Remember that postpartum depression is a disease. Women who have it are not bad people or irresponsible mothers. They are not to blame for the symptoms experienced. They are sick and need medical attention.
Treatment:
Fortunately this condition is treatable and usually responds to medication. The first step is to acknowledge your presence. The treatment is usually the responsibility of general practitioners or family, in more severe cases may need to consult a psychologist or psychiatrist. Is performed based on antidepressant drugs, hormone supplements, and family counseling through support groups.
