The Size of the Pants Could Predict Cancer Risk

Size of the PantsThe size of the pants help to measure the risk of certain cancers, regardless of weight, researchers in the Netherlands.

Having large waist and hips is a sign of accumulation of so-called intra-abdominal fat, that fat is “hidden” deep, especially harmful around the abdominal organs and is associated with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

“It is hypothesized that clothing size is associated with the psyche and showed that clothing size is a strong indicator of obesity and intra-abdominal fat,” published in Epidemiology, the team of Dr. Laura A. E. Hughes, University of Maastricht in Holland.

With data on almost 2,500 men and women participating in a large study on diet and cancer, the team validated the relationship between the size of a person’s clothing, size of waist and hip, and body mass index, a standardized measure to know how someone is obese or thin.

The size of pants and skirt was well correlated with waist circumference and hip in men and women, the team reported.

The team then examined whether the clothing size could predict cancer risk.

During follow-up averaging about 13 years, the researchers found that in women, a larger size skirt, predicted an increased risk of endometrial cancer, while in men, the largest pair of trousers predicted an increased risk of kidney cancer .

These findings suggest that “the clothing size reflects a different fat distribution that indicates the weight and height,” said “said Dr Hughes.

“The results suggest that clothing size is a very useful in predicting cancer risk in studies where the waist size is not available,” he said.

“It would be useful for future epidemiological studies to gather clothing sizes in addition to measuring weight and height, especially in populations where to get the waist circumference is culturally problematic or challenging for extreme obesity,” he added.
